Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) *

Did you know your Tail Lifts are due an MOT type inspection every 6 months, and that it is a Legal Requirement?

These Regulations (often abbreviated to LOLER) place duties on people and companies who own, operate or have control over lifting equipment. This includes all businesses and organisations whose employees use lifting equipment, whether owned by them or not.

LOLER also requires that all equipment used for lifting is fit for purpose, appropriate for the task, suitably marked and, in many cases, subject to statutory periodic ‘thorough examination’. Records must be kept of all thorough examinations and any defects found must be reported to both the person responsible for the equipment and the relevant enforcing authority.

When should thorough examinations be carried out?

To verify that lifting equipment and accessories remain safe for use, and to detect and remedy any deterioration in good time, thorough examinations are required throughout the lifetime of the equipment, including examinations regularly, while in service.

through-examination

What are the specified intervals for regular thorough examinations?

6 months, for lifting equipment and any associated accessories used to lift people, including Tail Lifts, Passenger Lifts, etc

6 months, for all lifting accessories, slings, hooks, spreader beams, etc

12 months, for all other lifting equipment, cranes, crash cushions, forklifts, telehandlers, etc

  • Barn Doors, these will usually swing open sideways with hinges down the sides, with either hidden (flush) or exposed (standard) locking bars, Highest security & allow full height opening. Most commonly fitted to Curtainsiders.
  • Narrow Lath Shutter, this will have narrow horizontal sections that slide up a track either side of the gap and end up in a roll above the opening, small top restriction & lightweight. Most commonly fitted to smaller 3.5 tonne Lutons and Boxvans.
  • Wide Lath Shutter, again, this will have horizontal sections but they are much wider and constructed of a heavyweight material, They will have track that runs inside up and over the load at the rear of the vehicle. They will also be under tension with a spring and cables. Most height restrictive and usually used on larger boxvans, especially if a column tail lift is fitted

Tail Lift Fitting

One of the most popular ways to load a commercial vehicle is with the use of a tail lift. Some of these are fitted when the vehicle is brand new. However, these can be retro-fitted after delivery or fitted as part of the second life of a vehicle, or something as simple as a change of contract the vehicle is working on.

Only certain tail lifts can be retro-fit with minimal alterations done to the body and we can do most of these at your premises by our mobile engineers, thus reducing the down-time of your fleet.
